Published on Thursday 28 April 2005 12:55

The East Lothian U-12 boys basketball team has won the Peregrines primary inter area basketball tournament.
The East Lothian girls came second in the same event. This is the first time that an East Lothian team has won a national tournament at any age group.

The boys section was competed for by three groups of three teams in the nine team tournament.

Teams from Edinburgh, Tayside, Glasgow West, East Lothian, Glasgow City, North Ayrshire, Falkirk, Grampian and West Lothian competed in the boys section while the same teams, bar Glasgow West, competed in the eight team girls section.

In the girls section East Lothian opened with a 14-6 win over Tayside. They went on to beat North Ayrshire 25-2 and finished their group stage with a 26-5 win over West Lothian.

Edinburgh also made it through the group stages unscathed and the two east coast rivals met in the final. After a hard fought match, Edinburgh won through in the end 23-13.

Top coaching post for Stevie

Published on Thursday 16 February 2006 14:32

Basketball in Scotland received a profile boost recently with the appointment of East Lothian's Stevie Duff to the prestigious post of associate coach for the Great Britain senior women's wheelchair squad.
Stevie has been appointed, along with head coach Garry Peel, for seven years through to the London Paralympic Games in 2012.

On the appointment Stevie said that : "Whilst success in London is a clear goal for the team, in the shorter term the focus is on the European Championships next year in Weltzer, Germany, and qualifying for the Beijing Summer Paralympic Games in 2008."

Kevin Pringle, chief executive of basketballscotland, added: "This appointment to the Great Britain post is certainly a fantastic achievement for Stevie personally and reflects the developing status of wheelchair basketball in Scotland.

"We hope that the growing strength of Scotland's wheelchair basketball league will support and nurture the next generation of young Scottish talent to follow in Stevie's footsteps and earn selection for Great Britain squads."

Scotland's Wheelchair National League is open to both able and disabled athletes alike and operates a central venue structure where the focus is participant satisfaction and enjoyment.

Haddington, North Berwick win youth basketball finals

Published on Thursday 18 March 2004 09:26

LAST Friday saw the finals of the East Lothian Youth Basketball League played at Musselburgh Sports Centre.
Stuart Mackay, 6ft 10in centre for the East Lothian Peregrines and Scotland, was on hand to present the awards to the fledgling Peregrines players before stepping into action for the Green and Whites in the first round of the Scottish Cup against Edinburgh Buccaneers.

Building on the success of last year's programme, the Youth League was expanded this year to include U-12 and U-14 sections.

Very exciting

Teams from Musselburgh, Meadowmill, Haddington, North Berwick and Dunbar competed against each other prior to East Lothian Peregrines home matches.

Finals night saw a pair of very exciting matches. Teams from Meadowmill and Haddington competed for the U-14 Trophy.

With the Meadowmill team fielding three Scotland U-14 Development Squad members in their ranks, they were clearly the favourites going into the contest.

However, once the game got under way it became evident to the fans of both teams that this was going to be no one horse race.

Excellent play

Both teams were clearly intent on making sure they gave their all in their quest for glory and the game could best be described as a defensive tussle.

The Haddington underdogs, through their excellent team play and defensive intensity, were eventual winners in a match that can only bode well for the future of East Lothian basketball.

The final score in the U-14 final was Haddington 11, Meadowmill 5.

The U-12 final saw Haddington once again represented, this time against North Berwick.

Fired up

This game looked at first like it was going to be a whitewash, with the North Berwick team jumping to an impressive first quarter lead, extending this in the second period.

However, the Haddington players and coaching staff were not going to give up without a fight and came out fired up into the second half to mount a comeback.

The North Berwick team did well to weather the storm and were able to maintain their composure and win the match 17-8.

Peregrines open basketball season

Published on Thursday 30 September 2004 11:53

It has been a long, if not hot, summer for basketball fans in East Lothian, who have been counting off the days until Peregrines basketball comes back to Musselburgh Sports Centre.
The waiting is over for tonight (Friday) sees the Peregrines open their season against city rivals Boroughmuir (tip-off 8pm).

Coach Toni Szifris is happy with the team's preparations for the season and is pleased to have the nucleus of last season's squad back for another campaign.

New faces for the Peregrines this season include former Rocks shooting guard Jirrell Bowman, Sean Mitchell formerly of the Edinburgh Kings, and Danny Reid from across the water in Dunfermline.

Pre-season preparations have included a road trip for the Peregrines to the Black Country where they played the Black Country Bears, winning 65-51.

On the way back up the M6, the team stopped off in Sheffield to play the Sheffield Arrows.

Down by as much as 16 points in the third quarter, the Peregrines stepped up their game in the final period to win the match 80-76.

The Peregrines will be hoping to build on their pre-season 100 per cent record at Musselburgh Sports Centre.

Also in action are the U-12 Youth League teams, who also open their season at 6pm.

Basketball: Gibson exits Peregrines to join Knights

Published Date: 19 April 2011
In a shock move, Scottish basketball international guard Grant Gibson is quitting East Lothian Peregrines and joining new club Stirling Knights, who, in their first season, finished fifth in the Scottish League with 11 wins and seven defeats, and reached the Scottish Cup semi-finals.
The Leith Academy FP, 28, who has been a regular in the Scottish National team for most of the last decade, is one of the best shooters in the league and his departure will be a blow for the Musselburgh-based club, who won only three games last season and finished ninth out of ten.

Gibson is anxious to stress that Knights made no approach to sign him, saying: "This has all come from me - I approached them to see what the possibilities were as I was impressed with the way they are set up."

"Hopefully, this will lead to trophies as I was fed up being on a losing team, but it all finished amicably at Peregrines.

"Brian (Ramsay] has done a tremendous job there and it was hard to leave him as he was the only thing that kept it together."

With hints in the air of more signings, Knights may well be the team to watch next season. By contrast, Peregrines may have to regroup if they are to survive.

East Lothian boys played in a six team tournament against teams from Grampian, Glasgow, Tayside, Central and West Lothian. The team did very well to finish in second place, just one basket away from taking eventual winners, Tayside to an overtime period of play.

The girls played in a four team tournament against teams from Tayside, Grampian and Glasgow. Once again the East Lothian team played well and finished third behind Tayside and Grampian.

Stephen Duff, East Lothian Council's principal sports development officer was on hand to present the trophies to double winners, Tayside.

He commented: “As usual, the tournament was played in a very sporting manner. I'd like to thank all the coaches and parents for their support of the event, but most importantly I'd like to thank the players for making the day such a great day of basketball and fun. Basketball tournament success

MEADOWMILL Basketball Club hosted their inaugural March Madness Basketball Tournament at Meadowmill Sports Centre last Saturday.
Teams from North Berwick, Haddington, Musselburgh and the host club Meadowmill enjoyed an afternoon of fun and sporting excellence, competing in events for U-12 and U-14 teams.

North Berwick lifted the trophy in the U-12 section after some very competitive matches.

In the U-14 tournament things were so close that the eventual winners had to be decided on points difference.

Challenge match

Once the points had been tallied up, it was announced that North Berwick had completed a clean sweep, winning out in the U-14 section by the narrowest of margins.

Players and parents were treated to a wheelchair basketball challenge match between Scottish Disability Sport's National Wheelchair Basketball Squad and East Lothian Peregrines Wheelchair Basketball Team.

The Peregrines were bolstered by Bob Kinnear of the Big P's and a number of players from the U-12 and U-14 tournaments, however, the Perth-based national squad proved too strong for the Peregrines and led by Gary Smith, coach of the Musselburgh U-14s, ran out eventual winners 30-10.

Training tops

The Meadowmill March Madness Basketball Extravaganza was made possible with the help of funds from Awards for All and The Coalfields Regeneration Trust.

With the assistance of these grant awarding bodies the club have purchased a radio controlled electronic scoreboard, 24 second shot clocks, portable basketball stands, training tops, and a selection of basketballs for all age groups.

The Big P's are in action tonight (Friday) at Musselburgh Sports Centre (tip-off 8pm) when they face Edinburgh Buccaneers.

Debut to remember

Published 23 Sep 2010 09:27

The new basketball season has begun and the East Lothian Peregrines’ opening fixture was at St Mirren.
The P’s have boosted their squad with the return of two former players, Adam Johnstone and Stefano Lucernoni, plus 18-year-old John Browne from Boroughmuir. It was the teenager who was to prove to be the inspiration for a fantastic, hard-fought victory for the Peregrines with a magnificent 20 points.
The P’s started extremely well, with Cameron MacGrain scoring three three-pointers (15) in the opening period as the Peregrines raced into a 24-16 first-quarter lead. The second quarter was to be the time for John Browne to step up and score 12 points as the P’s consolidated their advantage and ended the half leading by 44-35.
St Mirren were relying heavily on Nick Collins and Colin Railley, who scored 17 and 7 respectively by the interval. As the tempo of the game increased, it was not surprising to see Grant Gibson (10) stepping up to the line and scoring eight free throws as the Peregrines held onto their lead at the end of the third period 67-57. Collins and Railley continued to threaten the P’s defence, but Browne, MacGrain, Jansson (14) and Lyons (14) were equal to them.
St Mirren continued to peg back the P’s and actually took the lead in the forth quarter, but were running out of steam fast.
With less than one minute to play and the P’s leading by three points, Gibson was injured going to the basket and had to be replaced on the shooting line by Lucernoni.
Mr Coolness personified stepped up to the line and sank both shots and, despite a late three from Railley, the Peregrines held on for a well-deserved victory, 84-82. Man of the match, John Browne.
The county side are in action tonight (Friday), at Musselburgh Sports Centre, against City of Edinburgh Kings. Tip-off 8pm.

Ali secures coveted scholarship

Published 15 Jul 2010 09:26

STANDING at 6ft 10in tall, 18-year-old Alistair Mackay has always been head and shoulders above his basketball buddies.
But now the North Berwick teenager is quite literally towering above the rest - after securing a prestigious five-year basketball scholarship in America, worth $225,000.
Mackay, of St Baldred's Road, will travel to Davidson College in North Carolina next month to take up residence at the Division 1 university, where he will study while sharpening his skills in the country's college basketball leagues.
The talented teen has already been making big noises this side of the pond, having secured a place in the Great Britain under-20 team, with whom he is competing this week at the European Championships in Austria.
The former Edinburgh Kings centre is also a fully-fledged senior player for his country, and represented Scotland at every age group throughout his school days.
Now former North Berwick High pupil Mackay will live the American dream on a course which is "very hard to come by", according to mum Rhona.
"They will pay for his education," she said.
"To go there costs $45,000 a year and they're paying for him to be there for five years and play for their basketball team.
"It's just great for him because he sacrifices so much to do his basketball. As far as we are aware, he is only the second Scotsman in six years to get a basketball scholarship in the States.
"The Great Britain under-20 coach told people about him, and the ability he had, and one of them was this coach at Davidson."
Younger brother Grant, 16, who stands at 6ft 6in, is following in his sibling's footsteps - having gained himself a place in the under-18 Great Britain side at this year's European Championships.

Jumping at chance to bounce sport back to Capital

Published Date:
25 April 2011
AN American entrepreneur is on a mission to return fully-professional basketball to Edinburgh, and hopes to establish a Capital-based academy in the city to encourage youngsters to excel in the sport.
Donald Sampley, who is a basketball player himself, visited Scotland earlier this year, playing several games for Troon Tornadoes.

During his trip, the 38-year-old travelled to Edinburgh and decided it would be the perfect place for him to encourage greater participation in the sport.

He has been in talks with Basketball Scotland about boosting the game in the Capital, and hopes to use Meadowbank Stadium as a base for a totally home-grown team.

Mr Sampley, who is from St Louis, Missouri, said he had also held talks with Telford College to discuss the possibilities for a basketball academy.

He said: "Scotland needs another BBL (British Basketball League] team to grow the game and Edinburgh is the perfect location.

"I want to be in Scotland to help players become the best they can be. I want to set up a study abroad partnership, offering American kids the opportunity to study and train in Scotland.

"Scottish players will be trained alongside American players on a daily basis with a programme that focuses on individual basketball fundamentals, weight-training and nutrition, and at the end of the programme the players will be bigger, stronger, fitter and faster and more skilled."

He said the academy and the development of a top-flight team in the Capital would go hand in hand.

He said: "Seeing home-grown players will inspire youth players to work harder to become better themselves - so creating a British Basketball League team in Edinburgh that features highly skilled Scottish players is my ultimate goal."

Scotland's only current fully-professional team are the Glasgow Rocks - originally based at Meadowbank and known as the Edinburgh Rocks until they moved west in 2002. They are the only Scottish team to play in the BBL.

Mr Sampley said he had been particularly inspired by Troon coach Tom Campbell and Edinburgh Kings head coach Danny Costello during his visit. "I know that coaches such as Tom Campbell and Danny Costello have developed the game for the best part of 30 years or more and I'd like to be part of the next 30 years."

A spokesman for Basketball Scotland confirmed its CEO Kevin Pringle had held an initial meeting with Mr Sampley to discuss his proposals.

He added: "Basketball Scotland would welcome further discussion on what he could bring to enhancing the game locally and throughout Scotland."

Tragic Ewan funds to boost basketball

Published Date: 13 May 2011
THOUSANDS of pounds raised in memory of fallen firefighter Ewan Williamson have been used to help young basketball players.
Ewan, who died fighting a fire at the Balmoral Bar in Dalry Road on July 12, 2009, was himself a keen basketball player.

Following his death, his friends Tony and Vicky Coia raised more than £8000 by holding a fundraising memorial ball in his memory. The firefighter's mother, Linda, decided she would like the money to be used to help young people enjoy the sport her son had loved.

Initially she thought of setting up a scholarship to award a particularly promising player, but after some thought decided instead to share the money among several teams across the Lothians.

With the help of Basketball Scotland, the money has been used to help teams buy strips, trophies and to meet other costs associated with the game. Money will also be given to the sports department at Ewan's former school, Kinross High School.

Mrs Williamson said: "I thought long and hard about it and I thought it's not fair to pick out just one person in need of money, so I decided that the money would go to clubs who are putting a lot of attention to the younger-aged players.

"It will reach out to clubs who are struggling and help them get their strips and also the most beautiful silver salvers to go to the clubs and one for the national challenge competition, which was held this weekend."

Each of the strips and the salvers carries a Ewan Williamson Memorial Fund logo. An engraved silver bowl has also been purchased to be presented each year to the winner of the Lothians Men's League, in which Ewan played. Mrs Williamson presented it last weekend to this year's winners, Boroughmuir Basketball Club, along with salvers for the winners of an under 12s national challenge competition held that day at Deans Community High School in Livingston.

Mrs Williamson added: "It was emotional, but it's lovely to be able to do something so positive in Ewan's memory for children playing basketball, and also for parents and people who take the time to run these clubs. They need transport all around the country - I know that from my own experience with Ewan, so I wanted to give something back to other people.

"With all that we've gone through, it's about giving to others."

Janie McBrierty, of Basketball Scotland, said the clubs benefiting were the East Lothian Peregrines, Pentland Star, Edinburgh Lions and West Lothian Wolves.

Nationals 2010-11

"East Lothian teams performed well at National Challenges
Posted on16 May 2011.

The East Lothian season came to a head last week with the National Basketball Challenge. The counties premier basketball team had squads representing in the U12 and U14 age groups with boys and girls teams. The squads have been training with head coaches Mark Stevenson (Boys) and Charlotte King (Girls) since January in preparation for the prestigious basketball event. The best regional teams at each age group from around the country including Highlands, Glasgow, Fife and Edinburgh compete to become the top team in Scotland. The U14 boys finished 10th after a series of brave performances with a seriously depleted squad on the day.

Star player Liam Mackle was named in the tournaments All Star 5 and was invited to the trials for the U14 Scotland Squad. The U12 girls, who were coached by Edinburgh Kat’s star, Charlotte King finished 7th after some great performances. The quality coming through is very promising for girls basketball in East Lothian. However the success story for East Lothian was the U12 boys. Going into the tournament Head Coach, Mark Stevenson was very confident in the quality of his players and they didn’t disappoint. After some close games and a gripping final game U12s confirmed their potential with a second place finish, making East Lothian the second best team in Scotland. Head Coach Mark Stevenson said “I’m absolutely delighted all the hard work has paid off, our players really stepped up and showed their calibre today and have firmly put East Lothian on the basketball map. Farried Yassien and Ben Mchardy were exceptional on the day and lead by example through-out, it’s so promising for basketball in East Lothian’.

The club has also been awarded £1000 from the Ewan Williamson Fund to support its development programs. The fund was set up to support basketball opportunities after the tragic death of Fire-fighter and Basketball player Ewan Williamson. The club would like to thank Basketball Scotland and Mrs Williamson for this opportunity."
